The fortress was built into the south face of a rocky mass and is barely discernible from distance as a man-made structure. The Fortress of Klis has a history of more than 2000 years, beginning with the Illyrian tribe Dalmatae who used it as a stronghold before the Romans conquered it. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the site became a throne of several Croatian kings. Petar Kružić, a famous Croatian captain, led the defence of the fortress against the Ottoman invasion and sieges that had lasted for more than two and a half decades. The fort got lot of attention when the crew of the popular series “The Game of Thrones” chose the fortress of Klis for shooting as the city of Meereen.
